Libegő Chairlift
Libegő Chairlift

The Libegő is out of order 02.05-03.06.2022.

The history of the Libegő:

The idea of building a chairlift here arose in the early 1930s, however the onset of World War Two meant that the idea did not come up again until the 1960s. Meanwhile, other ideas for other chairlifts existed. In 1945 a chairlift was planned from Óbuda up to Hármashatár-hegy, but the army forbade the plans because they had taken control of the summit which from that time could not even be accessed on foot. The communist regime turned its attention to building the Pioneer Children’s Railway, and so plans for a chairlift did not appear on the agenda until 1967.

Construction commenced on 24 March 1969, and two years later, on 18 August 1970, the new structure was ready for testing. Two days later, on 20 August, the chairlift was opened to the public. Its lower station is 228.3 metres above sea level, and the cables rise 261.9 metres up to the ridgeline. Seventeen pylons support the chairlift, from which 102 chairs hang at between five and eight metres above the hillside.

The leadership of twelfth district asked for names to be submitted for the new chairlift.  Many ideas came in, which (as translated) included Aero-Bus, Alibaba’s Armchair, Steel Spider, Magic Chair, Wire Donkey, the Nauseator, Sky Cart, Upswing, Hanging Chair, Machine-Chair, Kissing Train, Rocket, Air Sled, Land Wire, and the Chair-Tram, but in the end the name Libegő (which means “dangler”) became widely used.

Interestingly, as the chairlift became extraordinarily popular among the people of Budapest, further plans for chairlifts in the Buda Hills were drawn up which were never realized.  One idea was for a 1820-metre cable from Farkasrét up to Széchenyi-hegy, while another from Hűvösvölgy up to Hármashatár-hegy would have reached 3120 metres, compared with the earlier plan for the 2200-metre chairlift from Óbuda. A line up to the Citadella on Gellért-hegy was also planned.
