The Cogwheel Railway is one of Budapest’s oldest forms of public transport.  It allows passengers easy access to Széchenyi-hegy (Széchenyi Hill), from where visitors can begin pleasant excursions along forest trails..

Its lower station is in Városmajor, which is not far from Széll Kálmán tér, an important transport hub in the city. Buses 22, 22A, 155 and 222, as well as Trams 56, 59 and 61 all run from here to Városmajor station. The railway’s upper station is located on Széchenyi-hegy, near the former Panorama Hotel, and barely 200 metres walk from the Children’s Railway 

The railway climbs through a forested valley (Diósárok) and the residential areas of Svábhegy. The uphill journey becomes more pleasant as panoramic views open up before you, while returning downhill gives you the feeling that you are really descending from the hills into the city.
 

The Cogwheel Railway is not only used by visitors to the park but also by many local residents, so it keeps to a timetable from early morning to late evening every day of the year.  It is operated by the BKK (Budapest Public Transport Authority), so valid BKK tickets or passes are required before boarding.


From the terminal station at Széchenyi-hegy, one can explore the green circuit forest trail, but Normafa can also be reached on foot in a few minutes.
