Átjáró-barlang (Passageway Cave)
Átjáró-barlang (Passageway Cave)

Átjáró-barlang (Passageway Cave), otherwise known as János-hegyi átjáró (John Hill Passageway), is an 18-metre-long cave located a few minutes’ walk from the lookout on János-hegy. Interestingly, adults can stroll between the two entrances comfortably, without crouching. This natural dolomite formation was first mentioned in 1900, and since then it has been extensively surveyed and studied. In 1960, during the course of an excavation, a nugget of hematite was unearthed that was 90% iron.  Researchers cannot agree on how the cave was formed. While some believe it is a natural formation, others say that it is the product of human labour. Whatever the case, this cave is something which will be an interesting experience for both young and old alike.

The cave is easy to reach from the upper station of the Libegő Chairlift or the Erzsébet Lookout, and it is also a short forest walk from the Szépjuhászné station of the Children’s Railway.

Directions:

From Szépjuhászné station of the Children’s Railway: Follow the red stripe walking trail which crosses Jánoshegyi Road twice, then at the third crossing turn left and follow Jánoshegyi Road for about 250 metres. About 1.5 km, in 22 minutes.

From Jánoshegyi station of the Children’s Railway: Follow the red stripe walking trail to the upper station of the Libegő Chairlift and then the green triangle and green cave signs. About 1.3 km, in 20 minutes.
